Golden Milk Hot Chocolate
It’s like regular hot chocolate, but better. This simple mix adds a soft touch of turmeric to the regular hot chocolate flavor we all know and love, with some added benefits that you won’t find in a packet of Swiss Miss.
While most whole foods have a host of nutrients, some are especially powerful. Even in small quantities. Turmeric and cacao are two superfoods that offer rich anti-inflammatory benefits and are high in antioxidants. Tapping into these powerful foods, even in small quantities, can help your body stay fueled and well-recovered through taxing days in cold weather.
So, while this recipe is a stovetop favorite (I looove a cup after a cold-weather run in my backyard), you can easily take it into the backcountry, too. If you plan to make it at home, I’d suggest leaving out the dried milk powder and instead, making your drink with milk. But if you’re using hot water as a base, adding in the milk powder will ensure you still enjoy a silky smooth beverage, even in the middle of nowhere.
Golden Milk Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
1/4 cup cacao powder
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon turmeric
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
dash sea salt
1/4 cup dried milk powder (optional)
4 cups water
Directions
Place all ingredients (except water) in a bowl or well sealing jar with a lid, and mix well. If you’re headed into the backcountry, store mix in a well-sealing reusable bag or another packable container.
Bring water (or, if you didn’t use milk powder, milk of your choice) to a boil.
Stir in the hot chocolate mix and feel your body heat up from the inside out!
Makes 4 cups of savory-sweet hot chocolate.
